RSPCA Turns Away Stray or Unwanted Pets

COST CUTS MEAN 'RSPCA' SHELTERS WILL TURN AWAY STRAY OR UNWANTED PETS!

Quote from the 'Times' article link below: "The move has been criticised by vets and animal lovers who called it a “dereliction of duty”.

According to the 'Daily Telegraph' article link below: "The RSPCA is Britain's eighth largest charity, with an income of £119 million in 2008".

This will undoubtedly mean more animals at risk of being dumped and smaller rescues having to take the strain of even more unwanted animals.

Julie Hamilton, founder and director of NLPR said: “With a 40 per cent decline in charitable donations and the fact that small animal charities are already over-burdened, the RSPCA's "dereliction of duty" will cause an unequivocal catastrophe for all concerned. The RSPCA's irresponsible new directive will create further suffering to both animals and earnest people working in animal rescue shelters. New Life is already receiving referral calls via the RSPCA and as we are a small charity with only a handful of volunteers with extremely limited resources and an expiring network, the strain will become unmanageable. The RSPCA have always relied upon individuals and small animal shelters to ease their load, with little to no financial assistance given back. Criticism toward the RSPCA is now at an all-time high as they turn away an estimate of 75,000 per year of unwanted animals and inadvertently dump a huge population onto the streets, all but for the lucky few that find their way into the arms of struggling rescue shelter facilities.

NLPR strongly feels that the RSPCA should revoke their new directive and instead attack the root of the problem at government level. In simple terms: they should campaign to curtail animal breeders. There is a crisis over-population of unwanted domestic and exotic animals. Their continual breeding has perpetuated and aggravated the grave situation we see today. Irresponsible owners and those who use rescue shelters as a dumping ground for no justifiable reason also contribute to the offending problems.”
